Amazon begins selling refurbished smartphones in India with Samsung and Xiaomi

In an interesting move, Amazon India today announced it will begin selling refurbished smartphones on its platform. The global e-commerce giant will start with selling Xiaomi and Samsung smartphones, which will be refurbished by the respective brands.
The smartphones will come with a minimum of 6 months warranty, which will be provided by the brands themselves. It is not the first time Xiaomi has partnered with an e-commerce player in India to sell refurbished smartphones. The Chinese smartphone maker had earlier tied up with Overcart to test the model, which BGR India had reported earlier in January.
“At times we get devices that are perfectly fine and have no problem, but they are opened boxes. This is a pilot we are doing in India to see if such a model can work,” Manu Jain, who heads Xiaomi’s India operations had then told BGR India.
Amazon says that the phones will be marked as refurbished to distinguish them from brand new units. This is also a pilot and Amazon says initially it will be limited to select models from a few brands. The refurbished phones will be fulfilled by Amazon.
“Our consumer insights give us enough reason to believe that there is a market in India for quality-assured, brand-refurbished smartphones at value prices. We are starting the refurbished category as a pilot and will scale as we see more feedback from customers. We are confident that the smartphone ecosystem will gear up for more brand-refurbished products in the coming months,” said Noor Patel, director category management – media, Amazon India.
