Amazon’s largest campus building in world to open in Hyderabad next week

Amazon’s largest campus building in world to open in Hyderabad next weekHYDERABAD: E-commerce giant Amazon’s largest campus building in the world is all set to open its doors in Hyderabad.

The campus has come up on a 10-acre parcel of land at Nanakramguda in Hyderabad’s IT hub. The new campus building, which is over 15 storeys high, is learnt to have a built-up area of around 3 million sq ft, including 1 million sq ft parking area.

According to sources, the building has been up and running since mid July but is not yet fully occupied and has been awaiting a formal inauguration. Sources said, the building currently houses around 7,000 people, which is slated to increase to about 9,000 by September end.

The campus, , will be unveiled next week by Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in the presence of Amazon's global real estate and facilities director John Schoettler and Amazon India senior VP and country manager Amit Agarwal.

While realty sources said the new campus has been built to accommodate around 12,000 people, Telangana IT principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan had earlier told TOI that it is expected to accommodate around 26,000 to 30,000 people as per indications given by Amazon officials to the state government. However, Amazon officials declined to divulge details.

“The new state-of-the-art campus is expected to be ready by 2019 and would house thousands of employees managing back-end operations for Amazon's various global business and technology teams,” the company had said in a release when the foundation stone was laid for the dedicated campus.

Amazon has been very bullish on Hyderabad, which also houses its largest India fulfilment centre spread over 4 lakh sq ft at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and will be expanded to 5.8 lakh sq ft by mid-2020.

While Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos had, in 2014, committed to invest $2 billion in India to take on domestic rivals like Flipkart and Paytm, it has since significantly ramped up its investments in the country to over $4 billion.
