E-commerce rises in the city

VIJAYAWADA: Whether due to the capital buzz or the changing needs of consumers, e-commerce is taking off in the capital region. The launch of more than 10 such firms is a clear indication of the changing scenario. What more? Almost all the firms have been doing decent business, with the number of customers increasing each day.

The number of online purchases in Vijayawada has seen an unprecedented surge. According to e-commerce business experts, at least 20,000 online transactions take place everyday in Vijayawada, the figure was just 2,000 in 2014. The big numbers include participation of big companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Ebay etc. They have also given good reason to other pan-India e-super markets like www.bigbasket.com to launch services in Vijayawada and Guntur.

"The current year (2015) has seen unmatched online business. The market potential is very high now.  That is the reason for so many businesses to crop up," said the founder of www.fatafut.in, G Balakrishna Murthy, who launched the city-based online grocery store. He added that plans are afoot to expand services to Guntur by March 2016. Fatafut has more than 1,500 purchases every month.

Right from the services of handymen for electrical repair, cleaning and pest control to laundry services and even delivery of food, all this is just a few clicks away in the city.

The firm Service Geenie, launched a couple of weeks ago, deals in providing electrical maintenance, handymen for plumbing, cleaning and other repair works. "We also have plans to extend our services to Visakhapatnam, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Tirupathi and eventually to other states. Our motto is to offer quality services by certified personnel," said the CEO and founder of www.servicegeenie.com, Satish. In just three weeks, his firm has served more than 650 customers.

Catering to the gourmets in the city, www.munchem.com, a pan-India service portal, has started services. It has tie ups with all the major restaurants. After placing an order in their website, food gets delivered at the consumers' doorstep.

Other e-commerce firms like www.domyseva.com and www.sundaykart.com act as directories, which offer information on blood banks, astrologers, event management firms, packers and movers, etc. Goli Vada Pav, which recently began its services in Vijayawada, also plans to extend online services.

Market analysts added that e-commerce services will only rise in the coming days. However, they said that it is to be seen how they progress in the coming days. "The initial buzz in our state may have led to firms seeing market potential. E-commerce is on the rise globally. Of course, there is a market in AP. As of now, there isn't any threat to normal retailers. The coming days are exicting and will give a clear picture," said executive director of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation, Potluri Bhaskara Rao
