Amazon India Launches Its Third Fulfilment Centre In West Bengal

Amazon India has announced the launch of its third fulfillment centre in Kolkata, West Bengal, ahead of its upcoming Prime Day Sale in India starting from July 16.
The fulfillment centre is spread across an area of 1,40,000 square feet and has a storage space of 600,000 cubic feet. The fulfillment centre in the state will enable faster deliveries and empower thousands of small and medium businesses to sell on Amazon.in, as claimed by the US-based etailer.
Apart from this, these centers will allow Amazon India to fulfill a larger number of one-day and two-day deliveries to improve the experience for Prime members.
The launch of fulfillment centers will support the growth of over 8500 sellers in the state and the customers will get their orders fulfilled faster.
Akhil Saxena, Vice President, Customer Fulfilment, Amazon India, said, “In line with our vision to transform the way India buys and sells, we have been consistently investing in our infrastructure and delivery network, so we can increase our speed of delivery and provide a superior experience to both – customers and sellers.”
He further said, that with the launch of their third fulfillment centre in West Bengal, Amazon strongly believes that it will be able to better serve its customers with one-day and two-day delivery. “The fulfillment centre will enable sellers to use the local infrastructure, save capital and help them grow,” he added.
Amazon India further aims to set up 67 operational fulfilment centers by the end of 2018 in 13 states across the country. The combined storage space will be close to 20 million cubic feet. Of the three fulfillment centres launched in West Bengal, one is a specialised fulfillment centre for storage and fulfilment of products from the large appliance and furniture categories.

What’s The Need For Fulfilment Centers In West Bengal?

As claimed by Amazon India, West Bengal is an important market for the company. Here are some points to highlight the same:
  • The state of West Bengal has strongly adopted the flagship programme of Amazon- Prime. Thus, the state will be able to ensure faster deliveries for Prime members.
  •  Prime membership witnessed an increase in West Bengal with members joining from towns such as Siliguri, Alipurduar, Bankura, Birbhum.
  • Has a strong presence of its own delivery network with over 40 Service Partner nodes and over 400 ‘I Have Space’ store partners in West Bengal.
  • Has 4500 sellers in Kolkata, many of whom sell products under the Prime program. Products with Prime fast, free delivery from sellers in West Bengal include apparel, home, books, kitchen and wireless.
Amazon India will be leveraging its application – Prime Now in top four Indian cities to offer ultra-fast two-hour deliveries to customers across categories, including smartphones and consumer electronics.
On the occasion of Prime Day sale, Amazon India is also planning to offer 200 new launches across categories. Many of these products will be available on Prime Now with just two-hour deliveries.
Amazon has been focusing on strengthening its position in the Indian market as Walmart and Flipkart signed the world’s biggest ecommerce acquisition deal. The company will further focus on its private labels across categories, which will offer the maximum deals. Amazon India has also lowered its seller fees in categories such as furniture and luggage. It is also looking to increase the number of its warehouses and fulfillment centres across the country with products so that most orders can be delivered the next day.
