Flipkart enters online grocery with Flipkart Nearby mobile app

Earlier this year, we talked about Flipkart’s intention to enter the online grocery segment, following the likes of other ecommerce biggies like Amazon and Snapdeal. Although exact details were not divulged, it was revealed that the online marketplace would look at utilizing its in-house technology and expertise to run the show, rather than acquire a player from the segment.
The ecommerce major has launched its mobile app, Flipkart Nearby, on Google Play Store catering to certain areas of Bengaluru.
The idea is to provide a supermarket experience to consumers, for which products will be available under the following tabs:
  • Branded food
  • Groceries
  • Staples
  • Beverages
  • Breakfast
  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Personal care products
  • Health & wellness products
  • Baby care products
  • Household supplies
Although users will be able to order any time through the Android app, deliveries will be done only between 10 am to 8 pm. Payment method is limited to cash-on-delivery.

Going app-only

So Flipkart sure seems serious about the app-only affair. Just last week we heard that the etailer has slowly started moving products to be available via app only. And then came the announcement that the Big Billion Day 2 would be an app-only event.
Is Flipkart testing waters with an app-only online grocery category?
