E-commerce forcing retail outlets to shut standalone outlets

VADODARA: On the lines of popular retail websites, a city-based social start-up has launched an online portal that can be used by NGOs to display and sell their products. The website will display a wide range of products made by affiliates of NGOs.

Handmade Hope, an NGO that promotes self-sustainable employment for the underprivileged, has developed the website that can help people buy handmade goods and artifacts online. The website was made in around two months and has an integrated online payment system similar to prominent retail sites.

People visiting the website can buy products by following few simple steps. The website also delivers products to the doorstep of the customer and has cash on delivery option.

"There are various NGOs that work for specially-abled children. The children at these NGOs contribute in making various kinds of products from greeting cards to stationery. Through this online portal we want to help these NGOs get wider reach and generate more income to support their cause," said Rushabh Gandhi, founder of Handmade Hope.

Gandhi added that the website is not exclusive and any NGO that want to sell its products can register. With no registration charges, NGOs are required to send in pictures of their products along with descriptions that will be part of the website. The products will be displayed after a process of approval.

The website so far has 120 products on products range from newspaper bags, elephant dung paper notepads, cloth bags, glass candles and recycled cotton paper.

"I purchased few spiral notebooks and paper bags from the website. The whole idea is unique as you can sit at home and in few clicks help someone," said Pankhuri Agarwal, a post-graduate student from Mumbai.
